Richard Vaillancourt, 78, of Beaverton, Oregon, formerly of Lewiston, Maine and Saratoga Springs, New York, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026 and has returned to the Lord.
Richard “Dick” was born in Sabattus, Maine, in 1947 to Conrad and Jeanne Vaillancourt. He is survived by his brother, Conrad “Larry” Vaillancourt of Auburn, Maine, and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Vaillancourt. He is also survived by his children: his daughter, Penny Main of Cleveland, Ohio, and her husband, Patrick Main; his son, Jason Vaillancourt of Beaverton, Oregon, and his wife, Melissa Vaillancourt; as well as his adored grandchildren, Molly, Michael, Sophia, and Owen. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Diane (Carrier) Vaillancourt, who passed away in 2006 and rests in peace at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in upstate New York.
Richard graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Army, where he served overseas along the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea until his honorable discharge in 1968.
Richard worked for Demers Plate Glass in Lewiston and later became the first sales manager for Harvey Industries in upstate New York in the late 1980s. He started his own business, Saratoga Springs Window Company, in the early 2000s and retired to Oregon around 2019 in order to spend more time with his grandchildren.
Richard was proud of his service in the U.S. Army and was an active member of many veteran
organizations. His most meaningful service occurred in the years following his wife’s passing, when he became a member of the “Monday Squad” Honor Guard at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga County, New York. He was proud and humbled to preside over military funeral honors for almost 2,000 veterans as they made their final journeys. As he once said, “My Monday Squad folded a lot of American flags over caskets, but I was so proud to be a small part of honoring these veterans.”
Richard will be laid to rest with his wife Diane at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National
Cemetery at a future date, after an honor guard folds one more flag for him.

Alfred “Fred” Schuttenhelm, of Clifton Park, New York, passed away peacefully on March 31st, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on February 8, 1932, in Troy, New York, Fred was a man whose life was defined by dedication: to his country, his work, his family, and his community. A graduate of Lansingburgh High School, he entered the United States Air Force in 1950 and served during the Korean War. Stationed in Japan with an early warning radar and ground-to-air navigation unit, Fred took on responsibilities that required constant focus and courage in uncertain conditions. It was a chapter of his life he remained deeply proud of, and he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal.
After his military service, Fred built a long and respected career with Allied-Signal Corporation’s Bendix Friction Materials Division. Over the course of more than three decades, he rose through the ranks from engineering and quality assurance to plant manager and divisional leadership. Known for his steady judgment, technical expertise, and commitment to doing things the right way, he earned the respect of colleagues across every level of the organization. He later completed his degree in Economics and Business Administration from Russell Sage College while working full time, which reflected his determination and belief in continual growth.
He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Rose McDermott Schuttenhelm, who predeceased him in 2017. Together they built a life centered on family, raising five children and creating a home that would become a gathering place for generations.
He is survived by his children: Mary, Karen King (her partner Hud), Richard (Mary-Ellen), Lisa Hernandez (Virgil), and Thomas (Sok); his eight grandchildren, Amanda King (Ben), Nicole Dell’Orco (Mick), Samantha Schuttenhelm, Danielle Sheehan (Luke), Kyle Schuttenhelm (Jordan), Isabella Hernandez (Connor), Gabrielle Hernandez (Andrew), and Joseph Hernandez (Helen); and his six great-grandchildren, Lydia and Arla, Allie and Kate, and Tripp and Lincoln. He is also survived by his sister, Anna “Liz” Kavanaugh, along with many extended family members and dear friends. To many of them, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Fritz,” a name that carried with it warmth, familiarity, and a sense of steady presence.
In retirement, Fred continued to live a life of purpose and service. As a longtime volunteer at Albany International Airport, he served as an ambassador, greeting travelers with kindness and helping them find their way. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Society of the Friends of Saint Patrick in Troy. Perhaps most meaningfully, he served with the Honor Guard at Saratoga National Cemetery, providing military honors for fellow veterans, which was a quiet and profound continuation of his lifelong commitment to service.
Fred will be remembered for his strength, humility, and unwavering sense of duty. He was a man who showed up for his family, his work, and his community. His life was one of steady purpose, lived with integrity and care.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 4 to 6 PM at St. Edward the Confessor Church, located at 569 Clifton Park Center Rd. in Clifton Park, NY.
