Robert Sidney Garland, 95, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and educated in St John’s Newfoundland and Sir George Williams College School of Art in Montreal. After immigrating to the US in 1950, he entered the US Army in 1951 where he served as a combat paratrooper during the Korean War, and subsequently served 20 years, going to Vietnam as an advisor in 1970. His many decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute and Glider Badges, and Bronze Star.
Following retirement from the military, Robert was employed by the NYS Department of Higher Education and was a long time resident of Ballston Spa, NY. He was a member of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Association, VFW Post 420 of Saratoga Springs, American Legion Post 1450 of Halfmoon, and the Korean War Veterans Association Adirondack Chapter 60. Robert served on the Honor Guard Association at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery and was a proud member of the Round Lake Volunteer Fire Department serving as Captain of the Fire Police.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Sylvia (Goodfellow), parents Rev Sidney and Eva Garland, sister Elizabeth Ross, and brother Major General David Garland. Robert is survived by his son Michael and his wife Deirdre, brother Peter and his wife Ann, and sister Joanne Dawson and her husband Simon. He leaves his extended family, to which he remained close, which include his nephews Rick and his wife Linda, Rob and his wife Joni, David and his wife Chris, and all of their wonderful children, as well as the entire Goodfellow and Sauter families with whom he had so many good times.
