Mike Marko

Michael F. Marko, age 85, a proud veteran of the United States Navy, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. Michael was born May 12, 1938, in Syracuse, New York. He was the son of the late Michael and Anna Marko and grew up in Minoa, New York. Michael married Elaine Reboux in August of 1961. They were married for 59 years until her passing on July 13, 2022.

Michael graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School. He received his Associate Degree from Pensacola Junior College in 1972. At the age of 18, Michael enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country for 20 years and attained the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Michael started his career on the USS Huntington, a destroyer. He served on various destroyer escorts. He spent the remainder of his career on nuclear submarines. He retired in 1975 after serving on the USS Sam Rayburn as Chief of the Boat. During his time in service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United States Antarctic Expedition Medal and the Navy Presidential Unit Citation.

After the Navy, Michael worked and retired from Carrier Corporation in East Syracuse, New York. Michael was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his work as a tour guide and maintenance volunteer for the USS Slater in Albany, New York, as well as his role with the Honor Guard for the Saratoga National Cemetery. He was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Michael is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elaine M. Marko, and his daughter, Kathleen M. Marko.He is survived by his daughter, Linda Smith (Martin); son, Michael B. Marko (Anne); his brother, Thomas Marko (Rosemarie); sister-in-law Jeanne Mignon (Robert); grandchildren Katherine Smith, Kevin Smith, Sophia Marko and Julia Marko; and several nieces and nephews.
